The school principal supports the library program explicitly through interactions with the school librarian; visits to the library; advocacy for the library program; and professional development opportunities by and for the school librarian.
The Penn principal and the teacher librarian have a weekly scheduled meeting. The principal approves budget requests and additional items for the Penn Library and makes sure that we have adequate staffing and that the teacher librarian is consulted about scheduling classes and other activities in the library. The Penn principal was instrumental in advocating for the Penn Library renovation. With her urging a Penn parent volunteered to write a grant to Lowe's for $25,000 in funding. The Penn principal has approved of professional development opportunities for the teacher librarian, including attendance at annual IASL meetings. She encourages the teacher librarian to participate on committees, engage in curriculum writing activities, and offer professional development for Penn staff. |
The administration sets expectations for teacher-school librarian collaboration and affords opportunities for planning to accomplish such collaborations.
The Penn teacher librarian met with the Penn principal and the Penn instructional coach recently to talk about increasing collaboration between the teacher librarian and the classroom teachers, based on the project to align the Library curriculum with the Language Arts curriculum. Both the principal and the instructional coach were enthusiastic about having further collaboration take place. As a result of this meeting the instructional coach spoke to the language arts teachers to promote further collaboration and invited the teacher librarian to attend grade-level planning meetings to discuss potential projects. |
